What is Hacktober Fest?

Hacktoberfest is DigitalOcean’s annual event that encourages people to contribute to open source throughout October.

It’s a way to highlight open source projects with boosting the participation of resolving issues by reward the committers.

You have to fix at list 4 issues merged in the principal branch to be eligible to a lottery to win a prize.

How to contribute with OVHcloud repositories?

First of all, all repositories are in the Github organization named ovh: https://github.com/ovh.

Eléa Petton – What if AI was the solution to understand sign language?

In the field of Artificial Intelligence, we often talk about Machine Learning or Deep Learning, but in the end what do these terms mean and especially how can they help us in our daily life?

During this talk we will first try to understand the place of AI in the vast field of health. We will then show the importance of data and develop an AI app capable of detecting and interpreting sign language.

This talk will show how it is possible to process raw data quickly to adapt an AI algorithm using Apache Spark. We will also see how to use distributed image processing as a way to enrich its training data.

The second step will consist in training an object detection model to recognize the different signs of the ASL (American Sign Language) alphabet through a Jupyter notebook.

Training a model is good, using it is better! Developers will learn how to create an artificial intelligence app from the trained model for sign detection on images or video streams. Finally, we will see how to deploy this application with Docker to make it accessible. This application will allow anyone to understand sign language with detection and written transcription.

Aurélie Vache – Common tips & mistakes in Go – and how to solve them

Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, Helm … These tools may mean something to you, you may use them on a daily basis, but did you know that they were made in Go? Indeed, the Go language is a language that has been on the rise in recent years, used to make microservices, cross-compilation, by companies requiring high performance and resilience.

It is a practical language, easy to learn, typed and with a rich ecosystem.

And it’s true, creating an HTTP server or even a CLI application in Go only takes a few minutes. It’s perfect … or almost!

It is also easy to make mistakes in this language ;-).

We will see in this talk, under the background of ReX and experience, tips and common errors, their solutions and how to avoid them.

Stéphanie Moallic – What if you were building robots?

What if you were building robots?

Ever since I was little, I have been passionate about robots. Nono the robot from Ulysses, Johnny 5, R2-D2, the robot in “Laputa”, those described by Asimov, all these robots have always fascinated me and I have often wondered if I too will be able to build robots . In recent years, with the wide availability of programmable cards and microcontroller cards as well as the use of 3D printers, it is now easier to create mobile and programmable robots.

In this talk, I will introduce you to the different robots I have built and programmed over the years such as an Arduino-based mobile robot, a microbit board-based walking and dancing robot, and a board-based hexapod robot. Arduino Nano IoT programmed in Golang in its TinyGo version for microcontrollers. The idea is to scan some of the means available to us to create robots and give leads so that everyone can embark on this great adventure of creating robots.

David Aparicio – Security, where to start ? Install party 🎉

You probably know about Linux Install Parties? Then let’s do the same with Security, we will follow the DevSecOps approach of the US Department of Defense. For that, nothing could be easier, come with your computer, your open-source project and your tools (IDE, CI/CD).

After a few presentation slides, we will go step by step through the security of your application. If your application is dockerized, we will evoke the good practices of the ANSSI on this subject. We will see, through this workshop, how GitOps/CI/CD allow us and organizations to improve our posture towards security.

David Aparicio – Gosec, in the IDE or in the CI, how it avoids to find its PROD down/hacked?

Gosec is a tool that addresses security issues by scanning Go code (AST). In this lightning talk, we will introduce GoSec and explain how it can be used to improve the security of your modern applications that offers an advanced vulnerability detection and remediation solution.

We will cover key Gosec features, such as detection of DDOS or buffer overflows, SQL injections, low RSA key size, use of obsolete and vulnerable cryptographic algorithms, poor TLS settings. If you are a developer concerned about the security of your applications (like any normal, well-built dev), you should not miss this lightning talk on Gosec.

François Samin – Overview of concurrency management in several programming languages

Choosing a language for a project is always an important moment. When objectively considering the numerous criteria, including syntax, ecosystem, maturity, etc., one is often overlooked but significantly impacts developer experience: concurrency management. In some languages, it is essential to understand how concurrency is implemented under the hood in order to avoid certain pitfalls and performance losses.

We will delve into the various implementations and uses of concurrency in Javascript, Golang, Rust, and Java to better understand the advantages and disadvantages of each. Sometimes supported natively by the language, sometimes provided by third-party libraries, concurrency implementations can be very different. We will cover concepts such as green threads, native threads, futures, promises, goroutines, work stealing, as well as asynchronous executors and developer experiences for each of these languages.

Olivier Beautier – Take the path of improvisation 🎭 to become a speaker 🎙️ who excites the crowds 🤩

Speaking in public is one of the most shared fears in the world, in the face of poverty, in the face of illness, in the face of death… (Nabla Léviste).

And it’s really a shame, because you have fascinating things to tell!

What makes the richness of our beloved “tech” conferences is largely the diversity of speakers. But it’s hard for many to take the leap, because you’ve probably never learned how to public speaking or build a compelling story.

In this workshop, we invite you to discover a selection, refined by us, of tools from theatrical improvisation, which will help you to manage your fear of speaking in public, and to give structured and exciting way to give talks.

Horacio Gonzalez – Kubernetes, dispassionate and for ultra beginners

Whether we like it or not, Kubernetes is part of our landscape today, adored by some and decried by many others. The reality is that Kubernetes is well established and will be present for a while, perhaps hidden under a layer of abstraction but the trend is still that it becomes the backbone of the Cloud Native ecosystem.

At this university, I propose you to start from scratch and discover together the fundamental concepts of Kubernetes: Pod, Service, Health checks, etc. During the 3 hours we will gradually enter more into the bowels of the beast to finish on these more advanced concepts such as the Operators. Each concept will of course be illustrated with concrete demonstrations. Being a developer myself, the angle of attack will be that of deployment and management of applications, all the operational part such as the establishment of a cluster will not be covered.

All the team was involved in the booth setup and was present on the booth during the event .

The booth was amazing, thanks to Horacio for his wonderful drawings 🤩.

During three days we met at our booth a lot of different people: developers, SRE, UX designers, architects, students, startupers, speakers, sponsors, organizers… A very pleasant moment of share and discussions.

Being present on the booth is not restful … The first thing is that we get up early, the opening to the public being at 8:30 am, you have to be there before (around 7:45 every morning) to set up the booth (mainly take out the goodies 😉).

Three awesome days of interactions, demos, discussions and … few talks. Yes, it’s not a secret, when you are a sponsor you can’t attend all the talks :).

Between each conference (breaks), we saw a lot of people, like a wave, arriving at our stand. A wave of people pouring down on us looking for goodies but mostly with great questions about what exactly we do, what moving to the Cloud means,…

The atmosphere was cool and we make beautiful encounters both with potential users and partners.

Note from Thierry: I was the junior this time, and it felt good ☺️ Devoxx France is a conference I wanted to attend for 10+ years.
The intensity of discussions was a pleasant surprise: that’s the first time I have such deep architecture discussions, or even little support cases.

How did David experience this Devoxx?

DevoxxFR2023 is a great event. I love the level of all talks, and also for the diversity & quality of the attendees. This year, I spent a lot of time in the Hands-on lab, the fact that they are not recorded, in very small groups, so the exchanges are rich, the workshop speakers are in proximity with the audience. Therefore they are extremely popular, because sometimes they are full, more than half an hour before the schedule. So it was a hunt for tickets (who mentioned black market 🤣).

How did Stéphanie experience this Devoxx?

As every time I go to Devoxx France, I always have a mixture of feelings: joy, fear of making a mistake, looking forward to discussing with people the subjects that interest me,… Always full of new things to discover but also topics to explore further. Many exchanges with people around. I didn’t go to talks because I’m always afraid of dropping out and I prefer to have discussions with people around.
It was also an opportunity for me to present a talk on a subject that fascinates me: robots and how to build and program them. The talk went well and people seemed interested and asked me a lot of questions during and after. It was really great.

How did Aurélie experience this Devoxx?

Devoxx France is not a conference like the others, at least that’s how I feel. Being a speaker at DevoxxFR is an honor, a chance, a great opportunity and also a lot of stress 😆 I always want to do well, and so I put a lot of pressure on myself for that 😅.
I wasn’t leading off before my talk, I knew that I exceeded 2 minutes during my rehearsals and that I passed in very last on Wednesday. But the talk went well, the participants took a lot of pictures (so they seemed to learn something) so I’m happy 🙂.

And the little bonus track, I had the honor of being Stephanie’s assistant for her talk on robots. The electronics and I have been 12, so I tried to do my best to prepare what I could so that she could concentrate as much as possible on her talk. Well, I made a few blunders, of course 🤣, and Stéphanie was awesome! Well done ma’am 👏

How did François experience this Devoxx?

I hadn’t been to Devoxx since the COVID crisis. I could see that the event had grown considerably since 2019, but without losing its essence: high-quality keynotes, conferences, labs, and a lot of kindness in the exchanges with all participants.

Récemment lancée en version Beta, AI Deploy facilite le passage de l’inférence à la mise en production dès que les modèles d’IA sont prêts. La version finale d’AI Deploy est prévue pour début avril et comprendra des modèles beta pré-entrainés NLP signés Gladia et Voxist.

ForePaaS

Grâce à l’acquisition de ForePaaS, notre portfolio de services Data va évoluer pour gagner de nouvelles fonctionnalités, en s’appuyant sur une nouvelle infrastructure, tout en conservant une approche No Code.

Tandis que les briques élémentaires seront proposées en mode as-a-Service pour l’extraction de données (ELT) avec une version Alpha attendue en août, vous bénéficierez en outre d’un Lake House pour vous permettre d’expérimenter une solution complète d’orchestration avec à terme la visualisation de la donnée, facilitant votre expérience. Le trafic reste inclus dans la tarification, que ce soit dans le data centre et entre les data centres, participant à la prévisibilité des coûts.

IAM and KMS

IAM and KMS are joining our portfolio to provide you with full encryption and control:

• IAM will offer centralised access management. Already using federated SSO, IAM will be offered via API at the end of February, and via the manager by May. It will then be gradually extended to our products, starting with IAM for the Public Cloud in late May, and IAM for Hosted Private Cloud on VMware on OVHcloud at the end of August.
• KMS will automate secret management, with a beta version at the end of summer.

Metal Instances

Following the launch of Metal Instances earlier this year, new Compute instances will be added to our Public Cloud solutions by the end of the summer. In addition to providing bare metal performance and on-demand availability, these new instances will benefit from a next-generation physical network, which will increase its capacity by 5 times.

What’s more, the Metal Instances solution is based on our renowned expertise in infrastructure management, hosted in eco-friendly datacentres.

Managed Kubernetes

Finally, a new Multi Cloud and Hybrid Cloud Kubernetes offer will allow you this year to orchestrate nodes hosted with us, with other providers and on-premise. And this solution will be reversible and open-sourced.

Storage

Your database consumption will be made easier, with the ability to dynamically select disk sizes. SQL databases will also integrate with S3 object storage.

If you are a Block Storage user and your storage requirements are constantly growing, you will soon get an NVMe-oF-based solution with much higher throughput rates. In this data disaggregation scheme, computing resources are physically separated from storage. A dedicated beta version is expected in the autumn. Make sure you register your interest, and you too can become a beta tester by pre-registering here. 

Artificial intelligence

You will benefit from the generational hardware leaps we are making on our infrastructures. These new generations will rely on the training phase, a crucial step already taken on by the OVHcloud AI Training solution, which helps hide the complexity of the infrastructure. Recently launched as a beta version, AI Deploy makes it easy to switch from inference to production as soon as the AI models are ready. The final version of AI Deploy is scheduled for early April and will include pre-trained NLP beta models from Gladia and Voxist.

ForePaaS

With the acquisition of ForePaaS, our Data services portfolio will evolve to gain new features, based on a new infrastructure, while maintaining a No-Code approach.

While the basic building blocks will be offered in as-a-Service mode for data extraction (ELT), with an Alpha version expected in August, you will also benefit from a Lake House so that you can facilitate your experience by experimenting with a complete orchestration solution, with data visualisation in the long run. The Lake House is expected in winter 2023.

This solution will be made Open Source for full reversibility and no lock-in, and will serve as the basis for future customisations.

Our VMware-based solutions will soon be able to manage applications on Tanzu services. The VMware offer will evolve and integrate NSX in April for enhanced security, in line with our commitments to maintain a trusted cloud.

For trusted environments, if you are an SAP user, you can already select SAP HANA TDI compliant Bare Metal servers, and you can deploy SAP HANA in a SecNumCloud-qualified environment in Hosted Private Cloud. With more memory available in these new configurations, we will manage the hypervisor and infrastructure with vSAN HANA-certified packs, so you can focus on your core business.

A new generation of Bare Metal

The next-generation Bare Metal will take advantage of AMD Genoa and Intel Sapphire Rapids chips, with configurations of up to 256 x86 cores per server. In terms of memory and storage, this new generation will have up to 8 TB of memory for dual socket models with NVMe, and up to 2.2 PB of storage capacity. The Scale and High Grade Next Gen products will be launched this summer.

You will also get several new GPU models with superior performance when it comes to AI, as they will take on the most intense workloads. A Grid Computing platform will be available to support you, with all the power of our 16 KW racks.

A beta programme is expected in October 2023. Until then, pre-register here.

Network

In terms of network, we plan to deploy connections of 25, 50, 100 and soon 400 Gbit/s. Coupled with 4 interfaces per server and OLA technology, bandwidth will reach new heights in the datacentre for maximum flexibility. The traffic is still included in the pricing, both in the datacentre and between datacentres, helping to keep costs predictable.

Avec la disponibilité des cartes programmables et des cartes microcontrôleur ainsi que l’utilisation des imprimantes 3D, il est maintenant plus facile de créer des robots. Durant l’été 2022, j’ai développé salaires.dev, un site open-source de partage anonyme de salaires pour les développeurs et développeuses. Après avoir implémenté le MVP en quelques jours, j’ai ouvert le site au public dans l’espoir d’avoir des retours et de pouvoir continuer à développer le site avec l’aide de la communauté. L’accueil a été très bon mais la transparence du développement m’a apporté un problème que je n’avais pas envisagé : les attaques de bots toujours plus intelligents.

2. Qui organise Very Tech Trip et pourquoi ?

OVHcloud est à l’initiative de ce nouvel événement. À nos côtés, plusieurs soutiens de renom nous accompagnent. Nous serons en mesure de vous partager leur identité prochainement.

#VeryTechTrip se veut être un évènement communautaire vecteur de passions mêlant surprise, inspiration, connexions et divertissement sans oublier une valeur forte : l’apprentissage, de préférence de manière ludique.

Mais c’est également un espace de discussions consacré à un Cloud ouvert et à un large spectre de thématiques, qui ont en commun de questionner la conception et l’utilisation du Cloud : infrastructure, hardware, développement front-end, méthodologie, électronique, approche Cloud Native, organisation des équipes…

3. Comment avez-vous sélectionné les speakers ?

Nous avons organisé, via l’outil de référence Conference Hall, un Call for Paper (CfP) ouvert à toutes et tous : collaborateurs OVHcloud et speakers externes. Ce CfP a été clôturé le 14 novembre dernier avec plus de 160 propositions.

En interne, nous avons tout mis en œuvre pour encourager les primo-speakers à se lancer. En s’inspirant des pratiques d’autres conférences tech, nous avons déployé un programme de mentoring et de coaching pour les speakers débutants afin de faciliter la prise de parole publique et d’aider à construire et affiner les propositions de talks.

Le comité de sélection des candidatures était composé de membres des équipes techniques, marketing et relations développeurs qui travaillent chaque jour au cœur des thématiques de l’évènement. Choisir c’est renoncer ; clôturer un CfP en est l’exemple parfait. Le total des soumissions était deux fois supérieur aux créneaux disponibles et si de très bonnes propositions ont pu être écartées, nous sommes fiers de vous proposer pour ce premier #VeryTechTrip un programme équilibré dans lequel chaque participant pourra se retrouver.

4. Comment rester à la page tout au long de l’année ?

Nous espérons donner envie à tous les participants de s’inscrire aux conférences nationales (ils sont déjà nombreux à le faire), comme aux rassemblements régionaux, dont le contenu est de très bonne qualité, à l’instar du DevFest Lille ou du SunnyTech de Montpellier. De notre côté, nous proposons également EcoEx On Stage, l’évènement annuel à destination de nos partenaires, en plus de continuer à organiser des OVHcloud Meetups partout où nous avons des bureaux (une dizaine en France).

Ce #VeryTechTrip s’inscrit dans notre proposition à destination des audiences tech de la communauté OVHcloud, au même titre que la Roadmap Github (Roadmap Public Cloud, Roadmap HPC, Roadmap Infrastructure) et le Discord OVHcloud, qui permettent d’interagir tout au long de l’année avec nos équipes.

5. Quelles sont les tendances dans l’IT en 2023 ?

Il y a les tendances visibles, parce qu’elles ont des applications grand public immédiates, qui pour certaines doivent d’ailleurs encore démontrer leur pertinence. On pense par exemple au métavers, à la réalité augmentée, avec l’idée d’améliorer et d’enrichir les interactions ou encore au Edge Computing. Et puis il y a des tendances de fond, comme la durabilité des activités numériques. C’est sur ce dernier point que les efforts et discours convergeront en 2023.

Alors que la fin d’année 2022 a été marquée par l’IA et la démonstration de ses capacités conversationnelles, il semble évident que 2023 prolongera cette tendance, avec de véritables attentes côté Cloud, qu’il s’agisse d’un écosystème ouvert et des nécessaires et légitimes débats sur les biais éventuels et l’explicabilité des algorithmes employés. Pour entraîner et faire tourner ces IA toujours plus sophistiquées, il y aura besoin d’une puissance de calcul accrue, un défi que l’industrie du semi-conducteur devra relever tout en étant plus que jamais confrontée aux limites de la physique.

Les entreprises de leur côté devraient développer un nouveau pan de leur stratégie Cloud, avec un enjeu de consolidation pour rendre l’ensemble cohérent dans une logique d’optimisation des coûts. Laquelle ne doit pas être le seul critère de décision quant à la chaîne de valeur de la donnée, les problématiques de souveraineté et de réversibilité étant à coup sûr encore au cœur des débats de l’année 2023.    

Dans la continuité de la spécialisation du Cloud en vue d’adresser des cas d’usage de plus en plus innovants dans des secteurs bien précis, l’informatique quantique poursuivra ses développements tout au long de l’année.

L’industrie du datacenter devrait quant à elle proposer davantage de choix notamment avec des datacenters déconnectés ou en mode Edge. Enfin, 2023 confirmera que la norme est aujourd’hui aux Moderns Apps grâce à une approche Cloud Native s’appuyant notamment sur Kubernetes.

6. Qu’en est-il plus précisément en matière de durabilité ?

Le numérique représente 3 à 4 % des émissions mondiales de gaz à effet de serre, selon l’Arcep, avec les terminaux (écrans et téléviseurs) générant l’essentiel des impacts environnementaux, de 65 à 92 % contre 4 à 20 % pour les centres de données. Comme vous pouvez l’être à titre personnel, OVHcloud est engagé depuis longtemps dans la maîtrise de l’impact environnemental de son activité, ayant développé dès 2002 un système de refroidissement pionnier basé sur le watercooling. Avec des datacenters respectueux de l’environnement, OVHcloud fait preuve de transparence sur son impact environnemental : https://corporate.ovhcloud.com/fr/sustainability/environment/. Les sujets ayant trait à la durabilité font du reste partie des thématiques du #VeryTechTrip avec notamment un nouvel outil au service de la transparence des émissions carbone : la calculette carbone OVHcloud.

Il va sans dire que la durabilité des activités numériques sera un sujet sur lequel efforts et discours convergeront tout au long de 2023. Si nos efforts au niveau industriel donnent le ton avec des indices d’efficacité les meilleurs du marché, nous croyons en la force de la communauté pour œuvrer dans le sens d’un numérique toujours plus responsable. À l’occasion d’EcoEx, en novembre dernier, nous donnions la parole à Navi Radjou pour développer le sujet de l’innovation frugale. Nous continuons de croire en la force de ce message : faire mieux avec moins.

Alexandre Vilain – Temporal.io – My workflows are cloud ready

Who has never found themselves developing an in-house solution to orchestrate complex business workflows? You start by adding a database to manage the state, then you add queueing to pass the data through your services and you end up developing complex retry functions that never handle all the special cases. Even before integrating their business logic, developers have to solve a number of workflow orchestration problems that make development heavy and sometimes complex to maintain. Can we stop reinventing the wheel?

Temporal.io is a workflow engine, derived from Cadence, initially developed at Uber and used in production at Netflix, Stripe or Snapchat. The paradigms brought by temporal.io are simple and allow teams to reduce their “glue-code” to focus on their business code. Write your workflows in the language of your choice thanks to its SDKs available in several languages: JAVA, Go, Typescript, PHP (and soon Python, Ruby, Rust & .NET), the temporal platform takes care of the rest.

The objective is to present you temporal.io: how it works, its use cases and its interest for development teams.

In this original and interactive talk, we will use the concept of the Hero’s Journey to tell a story, directly inspired by your experiences, and show you that you have everything you need to tell great stories yourself.

We met a lot of people with exciting discussions. We organized a contest based on the Gabaky game.

Many players came to try to win the Switch and at the end, after a memorable final, one of them won the Switch!

As a speaker (and coach)

Being a speaker at a conference is already a very strong experience, but when it comes to the biggest French conference and the talk takes place in the largest room, it’s indescribable.

In this talk where I learn to tell stories, I tell my own story and my fight against stage fright.

I manage to emerge victorious from this fight thanks to the tools of storytelling, and I transmit at the end a model of narrative structure adapted to the world of conferences.

I also had the great pleasure of being able to coach Alexandre for his talk “Temporal.io – My workflows are cloud ready”, from the design of the talk, through rehearsals in the middle of the crowd, to the final performance.

Alexandre’s talk was a success, I’m very proud of it and I can’t wait to see his next talks.

Aurélie Vache – Keynote – (What if we learned to) Learn and share differently

Abstract:

We are currently about 7.9 billion people on Earth and we are all different but we have to fit into boxes, follow the same program, and we all have to learn in the same way.

What if I told you that it is possible to learn and share differently, to appeal to your imagination and your creativity and that it is beneficial for everyone?

In this talk, I tell a story, I tell you my story, how I went from a person who had lost his passions to the creation of sketchnotes, videos, talks that are out of the ordinary and illustrated books. We will see that sharing differently, that changing things is not easy but that it is important and that it is possible with a few tips, that other people have done it and that now it’s up to you :-).

And finally, we will see that we each have superpowers to use wisely.

David Apparicio – Security at the early stage of the project

Abstract:

In 2020, the number of cyberattacks has exploded worldwide. According to a recent report from the French National Agency for Information Systems Security (ANSSI), ANSSI operations in 2020 have increased fourfold, compared to the previous year.

The Covid-19 pandemic has multiplied the opportunities for destabilization (cyber attacks) in several sectors, including health: Rouen University Hospital, Narbonne, Montpellier, Dax, Villefranche-sur-Saône, Oloron-Sainte-Marie, Saint-Gaudens … The list of hospitals is getting longer.

Moreover, since the RGPD came into force, the protection of personal data as well as the security ‘by design’ become central subjects in our projects.

I will present the techniques used and I will also talk about the management’s awareness of these important aspects. Indeed, even being in the internal network of a datacenter, we are not safe from an intrusion. The 0 risk does not exist. ~ Security By Design 101

Thierry Chantier – IoT apéro

Abstract:

After months of not seeing each other, we can finally get together with friends to share a fun and friendly time. And if we can learn and understand things that we had to struggle to understand alone, it’s a huge bonus.

This is exactly what we propose to you through the Apéro IoT whose objective will be to have fun and to have the keys to launch our first IoT project. This cocktail party will be interactive, participative (it is not impossible that we invite people to come on stage)… and also realistic (no tricks)!

Our joyful makers will be Philippe, Thierry, Louis, and you, our dear public. We will be gathered around a drink, to take a look at this complex and controversial subject.

We will propose you a hardware, SDK and languages tour so that everyone can return home with wishes and ideas of projects to test or realize.

Eléa Petton & Stéphane Philippart – How about helping Captain Nemo classify sea monsters?

Abstract:

Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, … We hear these terms every day, but what do they actually mean and how do we develop applications based on these concepts?

During this talk we will introduce you to the world of data and how easy it is, with the right tools, to embark on the adventure of data analysis and classification.

This talk will help developers discover how to develop learning applications and show that you don’t have to be a data scientist to develop your own machine learning or deep learning algorithm. We will show you how to create your first notebook with JupyterLab to help you take your first steps. This will be an opportunity for you to dive into the discovery of the underwater world by developing a model to identify and classify the sounds of marine mammals.

Finally, we will see together, with Streamlit, how to develop an application using this model.

Being present at this kind of event also means having the opportunity to see talks and have passionate discussions.

On the talks side, on top of my wonderful colleagues talks, I had the opportunity to see Pierre-Marie Aubineau who was sharing his personal experience as a indie game developer.

He explained how complex this kind of adventure is, the domains to master goes far beyond coding skills.

One of those domain is the marketing side of a game launch: his views on how he failed that point were really thoughtful.

His conclusion was full of reading advices and pointer to resources : a complete tour of what you need to start a game project.

Another important thing during that kind of event is the opportunity to have unplanned discussions with people full of passion.

For example, Friday morning on my way to the first coffe of the day, I stumbled upon Paul Pinault and we started a long, passionate and intense discussion about IoT.

He shared his vision of this domain and it was an opportunity for me to confront my ideas on the subject with someone experienced. Thanks a lot Paul!

As a DevRel

A DevRel in a conference is multi-tasking!

Attendee, speaker, keynoter, … and streamer! This Volcamp was the occasion for the team to stream a live Twitch from the conference.

And, during a conference many things can happens … for example: speak, discuss impromptu, for more than an hour, accessibility, neuro atypia, associations of women in tech and public speaking.

As a Keynoter

Aurélie:

In December 2021, I received a private message on Twitter, from an organizer, telling me that the Volcamp conference was looking for a speaker for the opening keynote and if that told me to be part of the adventure?

I admit that I have read this message several times.

Presenting the opening keynote of a conference, of their first edition in physics, is a lot of stress and pressure.

Creating this keynote was: 3 and a half months of creation, modifications, big big big doubts, revisions, the D-Day.

I was very stressed, but I really enjoyed doing this keynote, talking about a subject that has fascinated me for years, passing on the messages I wanted to convey while naturally sticking to the values ​​of the conference.

It was a HUGE challenge for me. I put a lot of pressure on myself, a keynote is not nothing.

I’m very happy with all the feedback I’ve had, from people who spontaneously told me that it spoke to them, touched them, moved them, made them think and/or that it gave them the boost to do what they wanted to do, try, dare, and that’s really great. The word that came up the most is “inspiring” and that’s really the purpose of a keynote so I’m more than happy.

I was exhausted but super happy with these 2 days full of emotions, encounters, sharing, discussions…

Thank you again to the organizers for trusting me and to my pro / community and personal entourage for always being kind to me ❤️

Because we have to say it again and again, it is important to be well surrounded in order to push back your limits and constantly move forward.

In short, being a keynoter, it’s a great experience that I’m not ready to forget! 🙂

Lot of talks given par someone from OVHcloud. Each experience is different but it’s always the same feeling: sharing with other people is so wonderful.

The organization was top, as in many conferences and the location very pleasant.

Everything was going well until a certain Aurélie attacked me just before the start of the keynote, a wonderful “icebreaker”…

Accordingly, we suggest that next year the event be renamed “Volamp”.

The conference

Devoxx Morocco is a very big conference, the biggest in Morocco.
What was striking was the enthusiasm and passion with which the participants went to the talks.
There were often very nice post-talk exchanges between the whole audience.

Participating in such a conference, far from France, is an opportunity to discover another culture, both in terms of computer science and personal life.
We come back home with a lot of beautiful images, contacts with wonderful people and a lot of stars in our eyes.

Horacio Gonzalez & Stéphane Philippart – How to develop a Kubernetes operator in Java with Quarkus.

Abstract:

Kubernetes operators are taking up more and more space in the Kubernetes ecosystem. An Operator simplifies the packaging and deployment of applications within Kubernetes but it also automates the operational part such as updates, migrations etc …
After a quick presentation on the key concepts of operators, this workshop will be an opportunity to dive concretely into the depths of the development of an operator.
So we are developing an operator. Great, but with which language?
For us, old developers, the choice was obvious: Java! And as we love Quarkus, we might as well mix business with pleasure: it is with Quarkus and the Java Operator SDK that we will accompany the participants of this Workshop.
We will develop a small Quarkus application and then we will code a Kubernetes Operator to package and deploy it. Finally, we will automate the operational part so that this application works perfectly and robustly. All this without leaving Java and Quarkus!
No need to be an expert in Quarkus or Kubernetes to follow the lab, loving to code and knowing the basics of Java are more than enough. You will no longer need to install anything on the machine, a simple browser and voila thanks to the power of GitPod.

Kubernetes is quite complex like that … but did you know that it is possible to add functionality to our favorite orchestrator thanks to plugins and a small tool: Krew?

We will see in this talk, that in a few minutes it is possible to create a plugin in Kubernetes to make our pods more user-friendly (depending on the seasonal theme ^^). But that’s not all ! The goal is also to share it with others and for that, Krew is “The place to be”. At the end of this talk you will have all the marbles in hand in order to be able to create & share your own plugin.

Stéphane Philippart – Kubernetes operators for any developer

Abstract:

Developing an operator can be rather impressive.
Fortunately, different Frameworks have emerged, including the best known, Operator SDK, allowing an operator to be developed in Go, Helm or Ansible.
Before develop an operator, we will see together what is behind the notion of operators within Kubernetes: what they are used for and how they evolve in the Kubernetes ecosystem.
Once these basics acquired, we will develop together an operator allowing the management of an Nginx server.
Yes but which Framework / language to choose? Go? Helm? And why not Java?
I want to offer you all three!
We will develop together the same operator in three different ways: with Helm, Golang and even in Java with Quarkus!
At the end of this talk, you will have the different elements to know if you need to develop an operator, how to develop it, and choose which language to use according to your knowledge!

Cloud Nord was the occasion for the DevRel team to on-board our fifth element!
Thierry Chantier joined our team in September and it was the occasion for the rest of the team to meet him in real life 😊.
It was also the opportunity to visit our wonderful office in Roubaix.

Aurélie’s talk (and her partner Gaelle) was the opportunity, once again, to show that even if we think that a technology is complicated, Kubernetes in this case, it is possible to extend these functionalities in a simple, playful and step-by-step way.

Being at Cloud Nord as a sponsor, speaker and illustrated book writer was a special opportunity to meet all day developers, Ops, SRE, students (…) and other sponsors who were interested in the book.

Many people were attracted by the book so it allowed to have people throughout the day, constantly on the stand.
Aurélie took advantage of these moments of exchange to learn more about the use of Kubernetes by visitors and was able to redirect to the rest of the team in order to offer them demos and tell them more about existing OVHcloud solutions.
